Conspiracies, Conspiracy Theories and the Secrets of September 11th
By Mathias Broeckers, german edition: 371 pages, Paperback, Zweitausendeins. 12.75. Euro
When Pearl Harbor was attacked "out of the blue" on December 7, 1941, the Americans were enraged at the chicanery of the Japanese. Today, diverse historians maintain that President Roosevelt knew about the attack in advance and actually provoked it. Roosevelt wanted to enter the Second World War, but until Pearl Harbor, 88% of the American population were against it.
When aircraft attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, out of the blue, on September 11, 2001, America and the rest of the world were appalled at the sheer malice of the assaults. The identity of the perpetrators and the enemy was announced immediately: Osama Bin Laden and his Islamic terrorist group, Al Queda. And George W. Bush quickly declared war on "international terrorism" – a war for which there had previously been little support. In the meantime evidence has mounted to support the theory that the US Government had been informed about the attack in advance.
Mathias Broeckers, a scientific writer, journalist, and longtime arts editor of the independent Berlin daily TAZ (Die Tageszeitung), stated from the very beginning that the unanimous voice of the media made him suspicious. It was as if they were all tuned to the same wavelength, even the most reputable becoming the voice of the White House. In pursuit of additional and alternative information Broeckers turned to the Internet, where day after day he fired new questions at the search engines and sent them out on new journeys of discovery. Starting in the Sept. 13, 2001, edition of the online magazine telepolis (which was honored with the Grimme Online Award 2002 for its "incorruptibility" and "professionalism of the highest level"), he recorded his research in an investigative journal that attracted millions of 'clicks' and instigated hot debates. The book contains a substantially more detailed, in-depth version of Mathias Broeckers's journal. It declares: September 11 is not only the date of a horrifying mass murder, but also the point at which bizarre absurdities, fantastic contradictions, suppressed background information and strategic undercover operations all came together. Is it really true that since September 11 nothing is the way it used to be? For the fact is: before that, a great many things were different to what they seemed.
A few examples? Grandfather Prescott Bush financed and supported Hitler before the US Army helped bring him down. As head of the CIA, George Bush Senior armed Saddam Hussein; as President of the USA he went to war against him in the Gulf. His son George W. Bush received money for his first oil company from the financial administrators of the Bin Laden family, whose offspring, Osama, he is currently trying to hunt down. Governor Jeb Bush sanctioned manipulation of the electoral registers in Florida to help his brother George W. get the votes he needed for the presidential election.
Osama Bin Laden is a product of the CIA, originally created to engage in terrorism against the Soviet Union. In January 2001, the Bush government's newly installed FBI and CIA personnel ordered that all investigations into the Bin Laden clan be terminated. According to Le Figaro, when Bin Laden was in the American Hospital in Dubai in July 2001, a representative of the CIA paid him a visit.
General Mahmud Ahmed, head of the Pakistani secret service, ISI, openly cooperated with the CIA. In July 2001, he transferred $100,000 to terrorist pilot Mohammed Atta and from September 4 to September 15, 2001, he was on an official visit to the USA for "talks about the Taliban." On September 11 he breakfasted on Capitol Hill with two members of the Select Committee on Intelligence.
Although the US Air Force high command was aware that four commercial aircraft had been simultaneously hijacked and that all of them were approaching absolute "no fly areas,” it took 75 minutes for their interceptor jets to take off. It was too late.
Why did George W. Bush initially pretend that he first heard of the attacks during a visit to a school? As was later revealed, he had been informed an hour earlier, so why weren’t the emergency forces mobilized immediately?
Broeckers is a stickler for accuracy. The official version leaves a great many questions unanswered: Why haven't the contents of the flight recorders and tapes from air traffic control been made public? Why didn't the names of the 19 alleged hijackers appear on the passenger lists? Why are there no photos or video footage of the crash site at the Pentagon, where parts of aircraft wreckage were clearly visible? Why was the wreckage of the aircraft that crashed in Pennsylvania strewn over such a wide area? Official denials notwithstanding, was it shot down? Why did the USA's top Bin Laden investigator, John O'Neill, resign in July, 2001, eight weeks before the attacks? What kind of direct dealings did the Bush and Bin Laden families have with each other? What sort of interests does Vice President Cheney's company, Halliburton, have in the pipeline projects in Afghanistan? Why were there secret talks with the Taliban government over these pipelines until July 2001? Why did certain people at the top stop FBI investigations into suspicious students at flight schools? Why did Bush and Cheney put pressure on opposition leader Tom Daschle to encourage Congress to stop a more thorough investigation of September 11?
The German newsmagazine Der Spiegel (42/2002) called Broeckers’s book "the bestseller of wariness," and the conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung asked with some concern: "Does such highly explosive material belong in the hands of civilians?" Broeckers is an investigative specialist in conspiracies. In this book he explains that the generally accepted version of the September 11 attacks is a conspiracy theory deliberately designed to lead world opinion down the wrong path. "Although it was the biggest police investigation of all time," writes Broeckers, "one year after the attacks the amount of evidence gathered against those who allegedly masterminded them, Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist group Al Queda, comes to no more than it did only a few hours afterwards: virtually nothing.”
Broeckers asks who stood to gain from these terrorist attacks and brings other notorious suspects into play. He is not out to inflict conspiracy theories on the world, he just wants people to take a more scientific, skeptical attitude to conspiracy, emphasizing how much more productive this would be. The reason: "Without an appropriate approach to conspiracy theory, our extremely complex and treacherous world would be impossible to understand."

Credits
Part I
Everything under Control
The first part of the book (up to p.66) is an introduction to the "science" and theory of conspiracies
The bio-conspiracy
The evolution of the biosphere did not result solely from the struggle for survival but equally from a "conspiracy for life,” a secret agreement between bacteria to cooperate.
Mulder's dilemma
"A paranoid always knows all the facts" (William Burroughs) - and that is the dilemma of X-File agent Fox Mulder: The more he finds out, the less he understands what he is facing.
Things are not what they seem
Every country has anti-conspiracy laws, yet appears incapable of surviving without conspiracies of its own in the form of intelligence services and undercover operations
The Elders of Zion, Hitler and the Illuminati
On the one hand, Hitler used the Protocols of the Elders of Zion as a propaganda instrument against the Jews - on the other(as Hannah Arendt established), the Nazis organized themselves according to the model of the “protocols” and designed the SS as a secret order dedicated to the conquest of world power.
The money conspiracy
For thousands of years all civilized cultures had a taboo on lending money with interest. Only in recent centuries has a massive conspiracy broken this barrier, with harsh consequences for the future of the world economy.
In the name of the state
A short introduction to state-run conspiracies, citing the examples of the P2 lodge in Italy and the "Iran-Contra" drug-smuggling affair in the USA.
Nine theses on conspiracy
"Conspiracies are the most normal thing in the world: A and B make an agreement behind C’s back - to gain an advantage."

Part III
Ask who did it, but don’t ask why
The third part of the book offers a tentative conclusion and outlines an alternative view of the events of 9/11
The myth of the free media
In the wake of 9/11 the mainstream media failed in their core duties: independence, impartiality, non-partisanship. Governments pronouncements were accepted as true, no questions asked. Only on the Internet could investigative journalists encounter reservations.
Cui bono?
Who really benefited from the attacks? Despite the dangers of a knee-jerk reaction, this question must be raised.
Spy vs. spy
All the circumstances surrounding 9/11 bear the handwriting and hallmarks of spy-agency operations
"God is not neutral"
Fundamentalism on both sides - and the failure of the policy of "My enemies’ enemy is my friend"
"Clean" journalism by "dirty" epistemology ?
If any criticism of the official version is defined as an "outrageous conspiracy theory," then true journalists cannot help taking a "conspiratorial" stance, because being critical is their main duty.
"Let one happen, stop the rest"
A note by a rogue (and since vanished) secret agent may offer a possible scenario of what really happened
The axis of suspects
Apart from the oft-cited "Axis of Evil,” an "Axis of the Suspects" is outlined: Saudi Arabia, Pakistan & the USA
Welcome to Brainwashington, D.C.
We all have become witnesses to and victims of the biggest brainwashing operation in history.
Epilog
In praise of anti-Bushism - a defense of American values
An essay on anti-Americanism. "The USA drove fascism out of Germany and re-educated the country so successfully that, today, we seem to be more ‘American’ than the new empire in Washington will allow."

Appendix 2
A short history of foreknowledge
