Khalid Almihdhar

Official:            January 15, 2000

Unofficial:            November 1999

Based on:

The Washington Post refers to hijackers Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid Almihdhar when it later reports, “In November 1999, two Saudi Arabian men moved into a ground-floor apartment at the Parkwood Apartments, a town house complex near a busy commercial strip in San Diego.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/nation/graphics/attack/investigation_24.html

Khalid Almihdhar, while living in San Diego, telephones an al-Qaeda safe house in Yemen owned by his father-in-law (note that the facility is not named, but references in the 9/11 Congressional Inquiry report are consistent with other mentions of this safe house). This safe house has been closely monitored since 1998, as even bin Laden himself makes calls to it. The NSA intercepts these calls but doesn’t realize the “Khalid” calling the safe house is calling from the US (This is only determined by an analysis of phone toll records obtained after 9/11.) The NSA had been aware of a “Khalid,” “Nawaf Alhazmi,” and his brother “Salem” having communications with this safe house in 1999. In summer 2000 there are additional communications to the safe house from “Khalid” and “Salem,” but again the NSA does not realize the meaning or importance of these calls. There may have been more communications—the section of the 9/11 Congressional Inquiry dealing with these calls is heavily censored. Some, but not all, of the information about certain calls is passed on to the FBI and CIA.

He asks her for a loan of $650,000 to buy and modify a crop-dusting plane.

He mentions that he wants to “build a chemical tank that would fit inside the aircraft and take up every available square inch of the aircraft except for where the pilot would be sitting.”

He uses his real name even as she takes notes, and makes sure she spells it correctly.

He says he has just arrived from Afghanistan.

He tells about his travel plans to Spain and Germany.

He expresses an interest in visiting New York.

He asks her about security at the WTC and other US landmarks.

He discusses al-Qaeda and its need for American membership.

He tells her bin Laden “would someday be known as the world’s greatest leader.”

He asks to buy the aerial photograph of Washington hanging on her Florida office wall, throwing increasingly large “wads of cash” at her when she refuses to sell it.

Comment: What a strange “please-do-remember-me”-meeting especially as Atta officially hasn’t even entered the US!

“A manager at the Anatole apartments near Daytona Beach International Airport said Ahmed al-Ghamdi, who was on United Airlines Flight 175, lived in the complex in 1995, while Waleed al-Shehri lived there from May through December 1997, while he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. (School officials say they have no record of Mr. Ghamdi attending the school.)”

“Hamid Keshavarznia of Reston said he rented a room to Alshehri for a few months about two years ago at a Vienna home he owns. But Alshehri broke the lease, telling Keshavarznia that his father wanted him back in London. “He looked too innocent to be suspicious,” Keshavarznia said. He said that Alshehri was a Saudi citizen and appeared to be in his early 20s. Information released by the FBI listed numerous possible dates of birth for Alshehri that would put his age at anywhere from 21 to 27. Keshavarznia rents out about five rooms in the Vienna home. Neighbors said they always noticed a lot of activity at the house, often at odd hours. None knew Alshehri specifically.”

“Neighbor Diane Albritton said she called the CIA with her suspicions about illegal activity at the house, but nothing was done. “There were all kinds of comings and goings,” she said. “People were always carrying cases in and out.” Albritton said the FBI called her home following the attacks to inquire about Alshehri. Vienna police Capt. Johnny Price said his department was not at all involved in any investigation, but that other neighbors had called the police and said they were questioned by the FBI. Other neighbors, though, said they had not been questioned at all, and Keshavarznia, an Iranian native and U.S. citizen, said he had not been contacted by authorities.”

“Authorities say Alshehri, 25, may have lived for a time, possibly as recently as 14 months ago, in Vienna, at 502 Orrin St., as well as in Daytona Beach, Fla. , where he graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, authorities say. Another suspected hijacker, Ahmed Alghamdi (…)  lived at the same Vienna address, according to the FBI.”

“Federal authorities suspect that the home may have been used as a safe-house for terrorists.”

  1. “Vienna police Capt. Johnny Price said his department was not at all involved in any investigation, but that other neighbors had called the police and said they were questioned by the FBI.”

Es ist sehe unwahrscheinlich, dass ein “Vienna Police man” Captain ist, Johnny Price heißt und in Wien das FBI ermittelte.
